Why is sustainability important for your business?
Differentiation - Stand out from the crowd by proving your sustainability credentials. Don't try to fool
your customers with "Greenwash", they want to see real and provable commitment both to changing our environment and to saving costs and resources.
Cut costs - By streamlining your processes and by
identifying and improving areas of waste and inefficiency through your reporting, you could reduce costs even
further - several companies have pinpointed significant, tangible savings from their sustainability programmes.
By collecting and managing information you will be able to set performance improvement targets enabling you as a
company to reduce and cut costs - the adage "If you don't measure it, you can't manage it" is very true.
Your obligations - Nowadays, as a SME, you are required by law
(COMPANIES ACT 2006) to
act in a way you consider to be the most likely to promote the success of your company; however, you must have
regard of the interests of your employees (however small you are) and the impact of your operations on the
community and the environment (often known as Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR). This includes your
suppliers and also your potential position as a supplier. This translates into the need to capture key
employment and environmental data and report on it either in a Sustainability Report or in your financial end
of year report. You may also form part of a supply chain to a larger corporate entity - as part of that chain,
you will need to comply with their stringent standards, if not now, very soon. Don't get left behind.
Your customer - Your customer cares about the environment, so make sure they choose
you over others because you can clearly demonstrate your environmental and sustainability credentials and actions.
You - You as an individual or group of individuals want to make a difference
and want to make a positive impact on our world - with a clear, straightforward
Sustainability Policy
and some simple reporting on as few as 5 key measurements, you can track and demonstrate your environmental commitment and
improvements.
